Lunch and Learn--Topic: Poverty and Homelessness.. Speakers will include Paul D. Benish, Mark Fuller, and Billy Bob Grahn. Paul Benish, is a Vice President of M&I Bank and treasurer and founder of GIFTS, a cooperative effort by local churches which provide temporary shelter for homeless men. Mark Fuller and Billy Bob Grahn will discuss their work to document and provide services to homeless indivuals in Rock County including the January street count of homeless. Mark Fuller is a professor of mathematics at UW-Rock County. Billy Bob Grahn is founder and director of the Red Road House, a transitional living facility. Mr. Grahn is a Rock County Board of Supervisor and member of the Governor's Task Force on Homelessness. His county board assignments include the Human Services Board, the Criminal Justice Committee and the Rock County Housing Authority.

The conference room will be available at 11:30 for those attendees who will bring their own lunch. The program will begin at 12:00 and end at 1:00. A question and answer period will follow and may extend beyond 1:00 p.m.

Lunch and Learn--Topic: Poverty and Students--Jackson and Wilson Elementary Schools.. Speakers: Mr. John Walczak, Principal at Jackson Elementary School and Becky L. Bicha, Principal at Wilson Elementary School.

Between 1997 and 2008m the percentage of low-income students has increased from a District average of 15.56% to 33.07%. In the 2007-2008 school year, Wilson had 99.1% and Jackson had 54.05% of students living in low-income homes.

The School District of Janesville is the 10th largest in the state. The speakers from the two schools will tell what is unique and what is ordinary about their students, put a face on school demographics, share current initiatives, and talk about present partners.

The conference room will be available at 11:30 for those attendees who will bring their own lunch. The program will begin at 12:00 and end at 1:00. A question and answer period will follow and may extend beyond 1:00 p.m.

Voting Rights, Voting Fights: Securing the Ballot During American History. Ann Bausaum will present an illustrated talk about key milestones in the long path to more equitable voting rights in America.

This program is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by the Janesville League of Women Voters, the Hedberg Public Library Youth Services and Adult Services, and the Nancy B. Parker Endowment Fund.

Report on Aging and Disabilities Resource Center. When Family Care, a state comprehensive and flexible long-term care service system is operating in Rock County the ADRC (Aging and Disabilities Resource Center) will advocate for consumers but be independent from the separate providers who will provide the Family Care benefit. League members will discuss Diane Ravitch's conclusions and how the information can be used to enhance our advocacy for public education. The discussion of this book is part of a two year study by the League of Women Voters to inform members and others on the role of the federal government in education.

Author Diane Ravitch examines the effect of national testing on school choice, NCLB, and foundation/corporate largesse on educational outcomes. The book discussion is open to the public.

20th Annual Susan B. Anthony Birthday Celebration. Hear My Voice: Win the Vote, a one-act play that follows the life of a young woman who campaigns for ratification of the 19th Amendment, will be the highlight of the annual event.

This annual luncheon honors suffragist Susan B. Antohony, born February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts, who for more than 50 years was a central figure in the struggle to gain equal rights for women. Open to all, the 20th Annual Susan B. Anthony Birthday Celebrarion is sponsored by the Rock County Women's History Committee in partnership with the Janesville League of Women Voters.

Comtemporary Issues Lecture Series: 350--The Most Important Number in the World. Bill McKibben, an environmentalist and writer, is the founder of 350.org, a global climate change initiative. His 10 books include "The End of Nature," widely considered the first book on climate change for a general audience.
